Abstract
The study was conducted to assess the coastal clean-up program to selected coastal clean-up areas in La Union. It sought to answer the demographic profile of the respondent; the effectiveness of the coastal clean-up program in term of distance cleaned, number of trash bags filled, total estimated weight collected, common trash, debris and litter collected and number of participants during the coastal clean-up; determine the seriousness of the problem encountered in the implementation and determine if there is a significant differences on the problem encountered by the respondents in the implementation of the clean-up program.
A set of prepared questionnaire was distributed to 495 respondents. The respondents were chosen among the implementing agencies, participating agencies and fisherfolks along the coastal areas of Balaoan, Bacnotan, City of San Fernando and Bauang La Union.
The statistical tools such as frequency counts, percentage, mean, weighted mean were used to describe the data while ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) was used to analyzed data.
Majority of the respondents were male, single and 30 years old. They live in their respective municipalities for 28 years and 33.13% of them were elementary graduates and engaged in fishing.
The coastal clean-up program is moderately effective. They were able to clean 537.37 kilometers, filled 6.30 bags full of plastics, cans, seaweeds, rubber, leaves and woods, with an average total estimated weight of 12.53 kgs. and done by an average number of 30 participants.
Moderately serious (x̄ = 2.75) was the degree of seriousness encountered by the implementation of the program.
There were no significant differences on the degree of seriousness encountered by the implementing agencies and the fisherfolks but there was significant difference among the participating agencies.
