dc.description.abstract | This study sought to determine the various behaviors of people towards cigarette smoking in selected public places. Specifically, it was conducted to determine 1.) the profile of the respondents in terms of gender, age, civil status, religion, family income, and personal features, 2.) the reasons why they smoke cigarettes, 3.) the places where smoking is regularly done, 4.) the related causes of cigarette smoking, and 5.) the social behaviors of smokers. This study negatively hypothesize .that there is no significant relationship between personal profile and reasons of smoking; personal profile and social behaviors. The data needed for the study were gathered by means of questionnaire that were developed and administered respectively to forty-four college students of students of DMMMSU-Agoo during the second semester of the school year 2001-2002. The study was descriptive-correlation in design. It described to some extent the profile of the respondents in terms of gender, age, civil status, religion, family income and personal features and how these variables related to the dependent variables in terms of reasons of smoking and social behaviors. To test the hypothesis of the study, the statistical tools employed were the weighted mean, frequency, percentage, ranking and correlation matrix. The following were the salient findings: Majority of the respondents are male, single and are between the ages of 19 and 20. Most of the respondents are Roman Catholic in religion and belongs to the family whose income range from P7, 000 to P10, 000. Those respondents often smoke after daily meal and when they have a serious problem. They usually smoke in places where numerous people are present. They are aware of the ill effects of smoking cigarettes and yet they still smoke to show that they are socially accepted in the group and feel the sense of belongingness. There is a significant relationship between personal profile and reasons of smoking: personal profile and social behaviors. | |
