Abstract
This study was conducted to: (a) determine the efficacy of neem leaf extract soap against mange in dogs; (b) determine the species of mites affected by neem leaf extract soap; (c) determine the most effective concentration of neem leaf extract soap against mange in dogs; and (d) compare the efficacy of neem leaf extract soap to commercially available antimange (Amitraz) drug. Twenty four (24) mixed breed dogs, regardless of age and sex, positive of mange were used in the study. They were distributed equally into four treatments, replicated three times, with two animals per treatment using the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The treatments were as follows; To - 0.3 percent Amitraz, Ti - 10 percent Neem Leaf Extract Soap, T2 - 20 percent Neem Leaf Extract Soap and T3 - 25 percent Neem Leaf Extract Soap. Before the application of the soap, skin scrapings were taken from the different sites to identify the species of mites present and determine their number. Two weeks every after each application of Neem Leaf Extract Soap, post-treatment mite count was determined on each animal. The data in terms of percentage of mange were analysed using two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). For further test of significance, the Scheffe’s test was used. The result of the study indicates that various preparations of neem leaf extract soap were effective against mange mites of dogs, Sarcoptic and Demodectic mites were affected by neem leaf extract soap. Treatment 3 and treatment 2 were the most effective treatment, and T3 reduced mite count by 98.51 percent and T2 reduced mite count by 98.44 percent, and both treatments were highly effective. Twenty five percent (T3) and twenty percent (T?) neem leaf extract soap were as effective as amitraz.
