Abstract
Corn (Zea mays) is a crucial crop in the Philippines that faces a significant threat from the damage of the invasive fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda. The presence of FAW causes substantial yield loss for farmers. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Nucleopolyhedrosis virus (NPV) from silkworms at the DMMMSU SRDI as a biopesticide against FAW in corn in the province of La Union. Larvae of NPV infected fall armyworm were collected from cornfields, and the virus was isolated and purified through centrifugation and filtration. The bio-efficacy of the isolated NPV and NPV sourced from silkworms was evaluated in laboratory bioassays by exposing FAW larvae to different viral concentrations on maize leaf discs. Mortality was monitored, including infection symptoms. The larvae of the fall armyworm were morphologically described. A pathogenicity test was done to confirm the infectivity of NPV from silkworms against FAW and vice-versa. Results revealed that NPV from silkworms caused significant mortality in the larvae of FAW in a dose-dependent manner, reaching 100% at the highest concentration. In contrast, NPV from FAW also demonstrated pathogenicity against silkworm larvae. However, mortality was affected and also increased in later instars. These findings suggest the potential of silkworm-derived NPV as a potential biopesticide for FAW management in corn crops. The potential bio-efficacy of silkworm-derived NPV against fall armyworm in this study emphasizes the need for field trials to validate its potential as a sustainable pest management strategy for corn.
