Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the tree species diversity and composition of DMMMSU-NLUC Watershed up to 200 meters elevation.
A Global Positioning System (GPS) device was used to gather the coordinates.
It was found that there are a total of 17 Families, 36 genera and 43 species of
trees. This compose of both man-made and natural forest growth. Out of the total plant species identified, 6 were planted for beautification of lawns, dormitories and along road sides and parks. They are the ipil, talisai, smooth narra, prickly narra, and big leaf mahogany. Likewise fruit bearing trees were planted for their edible fruits. These consists of 5 species such as are avocado, sampalok, santol, duhat and manga. Moreover, some species were also planted for soil erosion control purposes. There are also 12 species for
lumber purposes such as ipil, teak, ipil-ipil, gmelina, kakauate, smooth narra, prickly narra, big leaf mahogany, para rubber, red lauan, guijo and mulberry. All the remaining 20 species identified which were not enumerated but are found in the checklist, comprises the natural forest vegetation. This can be found and seen along road sides, along the bank of the creeks, ravines and most especially thrives best along mountain ranges.
The most dominant plant family is Meliaceae, the most common and the most
ecological important tree species is large leaf mahogany. The tree species diversity index of DMMMSU-NLUC Watershed up to 200m elevation has a low relative value of 2.45 and with an evenness index of 0.66 which is a high relative value.
