Field evaluation of hybrid rice entries and soil assessment under dry season in Bacnotan, La Union

dc.description.abstractCurrently, the impact of climate is the topmost challenge for agriculture. Unpredictable phenomena greatly affect rice cultivation, leading to a decline in productivity. The introduction of new rice varieties with more enhanced traits and heightened resilience to environmental stresses emerges as a solution to mitigate environmental problems. Hence, a field evaluation of hybrid rice entries in Bacnotan, La Union, during the dry season was conducted to determine their growth and yield performance. Characterization of the soil physical-chemical properties of the study site was also conducted. Soil analysis shows that the experimental area has a pH of moderate acidity (pH 5.61-5.91), moderate to good soil organic matter level (2.42-3.00%), and low electrical conductivity (0.0011-0.002 dS/m). The growth performance of different hybrid rice entries varied significantly. NCT-HYBRID 3 and M103 (Check variety) had the most tillers at the booting and maximum tillering stage; NCT-HYBRID 4 recorded the maximum plant height at the maximum tillering stage and NCT-HYBRID 7 at the maturity stage; entries NCT HYBRID 9 and M103 (Check variety) are the earliest varieties to flower and mature; NCT HYBRID 7 has the longest culm length; NCT-HYBRID 10 recorded the longest panicle length (26.14 cm); M103 (Check variety) has the most productive tiller; NCT-HYBRID 2 has the least non-productive tillers; NCT-HYBRID 6 and M103 (Check variety) had the least empty grains/panicle; and NCT-HYBRID 8 has the heaviest 1000 grain weight. In terms of grain yield, all NCT rice entries produced a comparable grain yield with the two check varieties, which range from 4.57 to 6.72 tons/ha.
