Abstract
Language serves as a primal form of communication between and among people. The languages around the world are dying at an alarming rate or danger of disappearing. The sociolinguistic survey is to preserve and to characterize the general language situation of the fifth class municipalities of La Union and also to look into the status of Iloko as its official provincial language. This sociolinguistic survey assessed the language make-up and language practice of households in the fifth class municipalities of La Union. Data were gathered using a questionnaire from respondent household heads and analyzed using frequency, percentage and median. It was found that Ilokano is the dominant ethnic group in Burgos and Pugo, while Kankanaey is the prevailing ethnic group in Bagulin. These three municipalities have their own native language, Kankanaey dominates in Bagulin; Ibaloy in Burgos and Iloko in Pugo. Almost half of the respondents are aware of the Iloko Code.
