Abstract
Proper storage of bottle gourd may effectively retain substantial viability of seeds
over a considerable storage of period. However, ageing-induced loss of seed vigor and
viability during storage remains an inevitable process that compromises productivity in
several orthodox-seeded crop species. Once they pass their expiration date, seeds can
certainly begin to degrade in quality and loss vigor. To address this issue, this study was
conducted to assess the effect of seed priming using gibberellic acids on seed
germination and seedling growth of bottle gourd. The different treatments used as follows:
T1– Water, T2– 300ppm, T3– 600ppm, T4– 900ppm, and T5– 1200ppm. This study
was laid out in Completely Randomized Design with three replications at Brgy. Salincob,
Bacnotan, La Union from March 27 to April 11, 2024.
Based on the results of the study, bottle gourd seeds soaked in 1200ppm
gibberellic acid obtained widest leaf width with 4.45±0.08cm. While seeds soaked in
900ppm of gibberellic acid obtained highest plant height with 12.28±0.03cm and 300ppm
gibberellic acid obtained longest leaf length with 2.62±0.03cm. Furthermore, the stem
girth of bottle gourd seedlings showed comparable response to different gibberellic
concentration that ranged from 3.38±0.14 to 3.35±0.04. However, there were no
significant difference among treatments in terms of germination index, speed of
germination, final germination rate, mean germination time, mean emergence time and
total emergence.
