Abstract
This study was conducted with the following objectives: (a) to develop an effective autogenous E. coli - Salmonella vaccine against piglet scour; (b) to determine the most effective dose of autogenous E. coli - Salmonella vaccine against piglet scour; (c) to determine the performance of piglets passively vaccinated with autogenous E. coli - Salmonella vaccine against piglet scour; and (d) to determine the economic feasibility of
using autogenous E. coli - Salmonella vaccine against piglet scour.
A total of twenty four (24) gestating sows regardless of breed and number of parity and their subsequent litter were used in the study. They were distributed into four treatments: T0 - control (without vaccine); T1 – 105 E. coli + 105 Salmonella/dose; T2 – 106 E. coli + 106 Salmonella/dose; and T3 – 107 E. coli + 107 Salmonella/dose following the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in three blocks.
Escherichia coli and Salmonella were isolated, purified and mass cultivated. It was formulated into autogenous vaccine. The vaccine was subjected to sterility and safety tests before administration to gestating sows a month prior to farrowing. After farrowing, the litter of each sow was observed for the occurrence of diarrhea. Data gathered were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to further test significant difference among treatments.
Results revealed that autogenous E. coli-Salmonella vaccine can effectively prevent piglet scour. A concentration of 107 E. coli + 107 Salmonella/dose (T3) was the most effective dose in preventing piglet scour. Passive vaccination with autogenous E. coli-Salmonella vaccine affects the performance of piglets in terms of gain in weight. The use of autogenous E. coli-Salmonella vaccine in the prevention of piglet scour is
cost-effective.
