Abstract
This study was conducted to: (1) identify the different ectoparasites affecting Philippine native chickens in hilly, lowland and coastal areas in La Union; (2) determine the prevalence rate of ectoparasites affecting Philippine native chickens in hilly, lowland and coastal areas of La Union; (3) determine the significant difference on the prevalence rate of ectoparasites affecting Philippine native chickens in hilly, lowland and coastal areas in La Union per species; and (4) determine which area shows the highest prevalence rate of ectoparasites affecting Philippine native chickens in La Union, considering age. Two-hundred and forty randomly selected Philippine native chickens considering age regardless of sex were used from 12 purposively selected towns of La Union were used in the identification of the different ectoparasites. The collected and preserved ectoparasites were brought to Parasitology Laboratory of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine (IVM), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), North La Union Campus, (NLUC), Bacnotan, La Union for identification. Data were tabulated and analyzed using frequency counts, means, and percentages. Single-factor Analysis of Variance was used in obtaining the significant difference on the prevalence rate of ectoparasites per species Two-factor Analysis of Variance was used to determine the significant difference on the distribution of ectoparasites per topographic location and age. Results of the study showed that five species of ectoparasites were identified in Philippine native chickens in selected towns of La Union. These were Dermanyssus spp., Gonoides spp., Lipeurus spp., Menacanthus spp. and Menopon spp. All the chickens in La Union were infested with ectoparasites. The most prevalent in all topographic areas were Dermanyssus spp.and Menacanthus spp. infested Philippine native chickens while the least prevalent were Gonoides spp., Lipeurus spp. and Menopon spp. infested chickens. All topographic locations, hilly, lowland and coastal areas in La Union had similar distribution of ectoparasite infestation but there was a significant difference with regards to the age of the chicken.
