Antimicrobial resistance is now a global threat to the public health systems. This study investigated the prevalence, the antimicrobial susceptibility profile and the multidrug resistance patterns of Escherichia coli isolated from cecal content of slaughtered pigs in slaughterhouses in the First District of La Union. A one-shot case was used in the study. A total of 66 cecal samples from pigs were collected in the slaughterhouses in the municipalities of the First District of La Union. The Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was used to assess antibiotic resistance patterns against 13 antibiotics. Majority of the samples were positive for the presence of E. coli with a prevalence rate of 98.80 percent. Most isolates were susceptible to imipenem, cefepime, ceftazidime, and ciprofloxacin but resistant to ampicillin, streptomycin, kanamycin, amoxicillin, gentamycin, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. E. coli isolates showed 45 different resistance patterns. The most common resistance pattern was AmpAxCCipCnKSSxt (Ampicillin-Amoxicillin-Chloramphenicol-Ciprofloxacin-Gentamicin-Kanamycin-Streptomycin-Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim).
