The silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) plays a vital role in the operations of the DMMMSU-SRDI. However, silkworm rearing in the Institute is greatly affected by infections caused by bacterial pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of antibiotics against infections or flacherie in silkworms caused by bacteria. Symptomatic silkworm samples were obtained from the SRDI Egg Production Unit. These samples were macerated and cultured in the laboratory. The cultures were used to inoculate healthy larvae through spraying the solution in mulberry leaf feeds. Seven different treatment groups were evaluated based on percent mortality, larval length and weight, cocoon and shell weights, and number of pupae. Results indicated that none of the treatments yielded statistically significant differences. The Institute’s own formulated bed disinfectant was found ineffective, particularly during the late instar stage. However, antibacterial treatments appeared to influence feeding behavior positively, especially under warm conditions. Among the treatments, erythromycin resulted in the heaviest larval weight. The untreated control group produced the highest cocoon yield and pupal count as well as the highest number of reelable cocoons. In contrast, distilled water treatment led to the highest number of unreelable cocoons. These findings suggest limited effectiveness of the antibacterial treatments tested at the SRDI conditions, highlighting the need for further investigation into disease management strategies for silkworms under field conditions.
