Abstract
The development of the native fruit processing industry in Adams, Ilocos Norte cannot be over-emphasized. This study was therefore conducted specifically to: 1) determine the demographic characteristics of wine processors; 2) determine the marketing flow and practices of wine processors; 3) determine the level of profitability, and; 4) determine the prevailing strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of the native fruit wine enterprise. The data were drawn from 50 respondents who were selected using purposive random sampling and gathered using a questionnaire schedule and personal interview. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive tools such as frequency counts, percentages, mean and weighted average.
Results revealed that majority of the respondents were married, female, high school graduate, had average 44.44 years in age and 5 numbers of children. The processors started their business with an average of Php23, 240.00 starting capital, with Php1, 345.00 monthly income, 1.46 employed workers and had been in the business 1.49 years average. Majority were not registered and started the business using the own funds. All of them were engaged in fruit wine making. They claimed that there was sufficient supply of raw materials for the production and expansion. They were highly motivated to engage in business becaus there is a continued from training activities conducted for fruit wine processors. Some raw materials were sourced from nearby municipalities like; Claveria, Cagayan, Dumalneg, Pagudpud, Laoag, La union, Burgos and Sanchez. Bugnay was the major product produced. All processors sold their product on cash basis at a standard price agreed by all processors in Adams. The local and tourist as walk-in buyers was their major market outlet. They claimed that the product and packaging development practices were adopted but seldom observed the process development. However, they always adopted the good manufacturing practices as in accordance with food processing standard.
