This study was conducted at Barangay Tibag Tarlac Tarlac City from May to June 2004 to determine vegetation cover and the soil-plant interaction in two selected areas. Area 1 is covered with less vegetation than Area 2. Vegetation cover was estimated using a 2x2 m quadrat and the method of Saito and Atobe (1970) was used computing vegetation cover of each species. The study utilized the exploratory type of research that focused o~ the different soil characteristics and plant species. Specifically, the study identified the plant species that are associated to high/ low percentage of sand, silt, clay, high/ low pH, high/ low organic matter and high/ low water holding capacity. PCA and CANOCOwere used to further analyze what soil properties influence the distribution of plant species. Result showed that Saccharum spontaneum having the highest plant cover are dominant species whereas Hedyotis corymbosa are less dominant in Area 1. On the other hand, Mimosa pudica are dominant plant species In Area 2 while Cyperus elatus, Pueraria phaeseolides, . Crotolaria saltiana and Urena lobata are less dominant. Result showed that high organic matter in the areas may hasten the succession of plants and further colonization of other plant species. Presence of leguminous plants may also lead to better soil condition in the area.
