Abstract
Reading texts appropriate to one's grade level contributes to better comprehension
and academic success. This study was conducted to determine the reading grade level of
junior high school students at the Laboratory High School (LHS) of Don Mariano Marcos
Memorial State University - South La Union Campus. Quantitative method was used with
a sample composed 0/ 130 students. Using the Adult Placement Indicator (API) by
Copeman and Ribarchik (1986), the data on reading grade level were generated by
computing the mean. One/actor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if
there is a significant difference in the reading grade levels and the current grade levels of
the students. It was found that 52% of the respondents have a reading grade level below
their current enrolled grade level. The study also found that there were Significant
differences in the reading levels and the current grade levels of the students. This led to
the conclusion that the majority 0/ the junior high school students can read, but have
reading levels that are generally lower than their grade levels.
