Abstract
This study determined the areas of difficulties of D:rv1MMSU-SLUC,College of
Education BSE IV General Science Majors in selected topics in Genetics in Agoo, La
Union during the school year 2003-2004.
Specifically, it, sought to answer the following questions:
(I) What is the profile of the students in terms of sex, parents' educational
attainment, monthly family income, number of siblings in the family, and their grade
point average? (2) Their level of knowledge in seven areas of Genetics such as;
Monohybrid Genetic Cross, Dihybrid Genetic Cross, Central Dogma of Molecular
Genetics, Physical Basis of Heredity, Relation of Sex to Inheritance and Lethal Genes,
Probability and Goodness of Fit, and Genetics of Human Blood Group (3) Is there a
significant relationship between sex, parents' educational attainment, monthly family
income, and number of siblings as to their test scores in the performance test? (4) Is there
a significant relationship between the students' grade point average in Genetics and their
test scores in the performance test?
It also tested the following two null hypotheses:
(1) There is no significant relationship between the students profile as to sex,
parents' educational attainment, monthly family income, and number of siblings in the
family and their test scores in the performance test. (2) There is no significant
relationship between the students' grade point average and their test scores in the
performance test.
This study made use of descriptive correlation method of research. It consisted of
17 BSE IV students from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University Southern La
Union Campus Agoo, La Union. Questionnaires were used in gathering data particularly
on student related factors. To determine the level of knowledge of students in Genetics a
performance test was utilized on February 27, 2004.
Statistical tools such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and Pearson
Product Moment Correlation using the :MICROSTAT program of software were used.
The data obtained in the study revealed the following findings. (1) Based on the
data gathered, there were 7 (or 41.18 percent) male student subjects and 10 (or 58.82
percent) female student subjects. As to their father and mothers' educational attainment
there were 11 (or 64.71 percent) and 9 (or 52.94 percent) respectively were in the bracket
of those who went some years in college and high school or were graduated in high
S,9RoOI.With regards to their monthly family income there were 10 (or 58.82 percent)
who belonged to a family whose income ranged from P 6,000 and below. Most of the
students (8 or 47.06 percent) belonged to a family with 4 to 6 siblings. As to their grades
in Genetics only one got a general percentage average of2.0. (2) The study revealed that
the students performed moderate in most areas of Genetics like Monohybrid Genetics
Cross, Physical Basis of Heredity, Genetics of Human Blood and Probability and
Goodness of Fit. The student seems to find difficulties in three left areas, The Central
Dogma of Molecular Genetics, Dihybrid Genetic Cross, and the Relation of Sex to
Inheritance and Lethal Genes. (3) The computed Pearson Product Moment Correlation of
Coefficient of the variables like sex, parents' educational attainment, monthly family
income, and number of siblings are lesser than the critical value of 0.41340 at 0.05 level
of significance. (4) The Pearson Product Moment Correlation of Coefficient in their
grade point average in Genetics is greater than the critical value of 0.41340 at level of
significance.
Based on the findings, the following conclusions were made (1) Most of the BSE
IV General Science major students in DM1vfMSU-SLUC, Agoo La Union are female and
most of their parents have a better educational attainment. Most of them have a low
monthly family income and belong to a family with 4-6 children. (2) The BSE IV
General Science major students find three areas of Genetics the Central Dogma of
Molecular Genetics, Dihybrid Genetic Cross, and the Relation of Sex to Inheritance and
Lethal Genes is considered to be the most difficult. (3) There was no significant
relationship exist between their scores in Genetics and their sex, parents' educational
attainment, monthly family income, and number of siblings in the family. (4) A
significant relationship exists between their Grade Point Average and their test scores in
different areas of Genetics.
