Abstract
This study was conducted to (1) determine profile of irrigation systems such as pressurized/pump system and gravity flow system in the First District of La Union; (2) determine the level of effectiveness of the irrigation practices/systems used in crop production; (3) determine the extent of seriousness of the problems encountered in the adoption of irrigation practices/systems as perceived by the farmers; and (4) proposed irrigation enhancement and maintenance scheme for the crop productivity. Two hundred seventy (270) farmers were involved as adopters/respondents coming from the First District of La Union. A checklist-type questionnaire and interview schedule were used as instruments in gathering data from the respondents. Findings: The profile of the irrigation practices/systems based on the answers of the farmers showed that pressurized/pump system that were used by farmers can irrigate with an average of 0.95 hectare while in the gravity flow is 1.5 hectare. Their level of effectiveness as perceived by the farmer adopters/respondents was Moderately Effective. The problems encountered in the adoption of irrigation practices/systems as perceived by the farmers are the dysfunctional/damaged irrigation facilities and structures; poor organization and management; poor construction of irrigation facilities; clogging of canals; lack of water supply; and inadequate irrigation and drainage ditches as perceived by the farmers that is highly serious.
