| dc.description.abstract | This study was conducted to determine the environmental effect of wood carving and furniture shops in selected municipalities of La Union. It sought to ensure the following questions (1) The socio – economic profile of the respondents in terms of gender, civil status, age, number of years in the business, educational attainment, net monthly income, types of house, house ownership, number of dependent, other properties owned by the respondents (2) The common wood species used in wood carving and furniture making by the respondents (3) Level of environmental effect of wood carving and furniture making in terms of (a) Air Quality (b) Aesthetic Quality (c) Noise Quality. There are 58 respondents in the study, composed of managers. The distribution of the respondents was as follows: Rosario, Agoo, Pugo, Naguilian, San Juan, San Gabriel, and Bacnotan, Informal interviews with the use of prepared questionnaires and personal observations were undertaken to gather pertinent data, which were analyzed and interpreted with the use of statistical tools such as frequency counts, percentage, means and ranking. The respondents is dominated by males (68.97%), aged 36 – 40, majority of them were married (87.93%), most of them are college graduates (25.86%), have a 1 – 3 dependent, earning about P 6,000 – 10, 000 monthly income, and engage in the business for 6 – 10 years, most (82.76%) of the respondent owned permanent house, most of them acquired appliances (ranked 1), house (ranked 2), lots (rank 3), and vehicles (rank 4). Most of the wood species used by the respondents in wood carving and furniture making are yemane, mahogany, mangga, acacia, and santol and the other species of wood is not common as the data shows. Most of the respondents perceived that in wood carving and furniture making has a severe effect on air quality with an average mean of 2.49 while the aesthetic quality is moderately affected with an average mean of 1.85 and noise quality with an average mean of 1.98. | |
