Abstract
The study was conducted to: (1) determine the efficacy of lemon grass extract against fungi; (2) determine the most effective concentration of lemon grass extract against fungi; and (3) to determine which fungi are affected by the lemon grass extract.
Fresh leaves and stalk of lemon grass were chopped and were ground. Using cheesecloth, the ground leaves and stalk were squeezed until the extract came out. The extract were collected in a container and prepared following the different treatments.
The lemon grass was prepared with the following treatments: (T0) Distilled water, (T1) Pure Lemon Grass Extract, (T2) Ninety (90) percent Lemon Grass Extract + 10 percent distilled water, (T3) 80 percent Lemon Grass Extract + 20 percent distilled water, (T4) 70 percent Lemon Grass Extract + 30 percent distilled water.
Sixty five (65) grams of Sabouraud’s Dextrose Agar was suspended in one thousand (1000) ml distilled water. It was boiled to dissolve medium completely. It was sterilized by autoclaving at 121 ºC for 15 minutes. It was dispensed in to sterile petri dishes. A puncher was used to make a filter paper disc then sterilized. The discs were immersed overnight in the different treatments.
A pure culture of Microsporum canis and Candida albicans were inoculated into Sabouraud’s Dextrose Agar Plate. The plate of M. canis was incubated at 25 ºC for fourteen (14) days. The zone of inhibition was measured at day seven (7). The C. albicans as the inoculum was incubated for ten (10) days and the zone of inhibition was
measured at day three (3).
Results showed that lemon grass extract was not effective against Mircosporum canis and Candida albicans. There was no effective concentration of lemon grass extract against Microsporum canis and Candida albicans. The in vitro testing of lemon grass extract showed that M. canis and C. albicans were not affected by different treatments.
