| dc.description.abstract | Aquaponics is a method of growing plants, particularly vegetables, in a soilless medium where all the nutrients that the plants require to grow are provided via water that is circulated around the plant root systems. This study was conducted to determine the growth response of Lettuce and Tilapia using different types of aquaponic system. Three recirculating aquaponic systems were installed in a greenhouse. Culture water was lifted by a 45-watt submersible pump from the growbed to the filtration tank and allowed to flow by gravity through pipe to the fish tank for treatment 1 and from growbed directly to the fish tank for treatments 2 and 3. Water from the fish tank was also lifted by a 45-watt submersible pump to the growbed. Hydroponically germinated seedlings on seeding tray were planted on the rafts at 25 cm spacing 40 days after stocking Tilapia. Data for the length of leaf and roots of Lettuce and weight gain of Tilapia were gathered 20 days after transplanting. One thousand two hundred (1200) Tilapia and 240 Lettuce were used in the study. Floating Raft, Flood and Drain, and the combination of the two served as treatments replicated four times. Significant results on the length of leaves and roots and weight gain of fish were found with treatment 3 as the best. Further, significant relationship on the lengths of roots and leaves was recorded. Weight gain of fish significantly differed from day 15 to day 20 for all treatments. | |
