Abstract
To better understand how the first-year Bachelor of Arts in English Language (BAEL)
students at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University's (DMMMSU) College of Arts and
Sciences in Agoo, La Union coped with the learning challenges caused by the onslaught of the
pandemic, this study assessed the learning difficulties experienced by the freshmen students as
well as the strategies they employed. Results of thefocus group discussions and interviews reveal
that the students' proficiency in the four macro skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and
writing in the target language need to be enhanced. As a matter of result, noise barriers,
distraction, public speaking anxiety, unfamiliar words, poor comprehension, lack of vocabulary,
grammatical structure, and spelling were the mentioned learning difficulties. On the other hand,
staying focused, listening attentively, being confident, reading books, searching for some
unfamiliar words, and practicing writing are some of the strategies they are utilizing to enhance
their oral expression, fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension skills.
