dc.description.abstractThis study was conducted to determine the: (a) prevalence, (b) spatial distribution, (c) temporal distribution, (d) factors contributing to the occurrence, and (e) measures employed by backyard chicken raisers to prevent and control Newcastle Disease (ND) in Ilocos Sur. Three hundred seventy five (375) backyard chicken raisers from 15 randomly selected municipalities were interviewed using structured questionnaire. The municipalities were classified into upland, lowland and coastal. ND was prevalent in Ilocos Sur. Upland municipalities were mostly affected. The temporal distribution of ND was during the end of summer and start of rainy season. Regardless of age and sex, chickens can be affected with the disease. Chickens raised in free range can facilitate spread and transmission of the disease. The source of infection were their neighbor raisers and neighboring barangays. Medication, vaccination, proper disposal of dead chicken, reporting, consultation and education were not fully practiced by the backyard chicken raisers.
