Abstract
The study was conducted to determine the mangrove cover along the coastal areas of the Municipality of Bacnotan, La Union. It specifically aimed to determine the a) percentage of mangrove cover along the coastal areas; b) significant relationship between percentage mangrove cover and distance of mangroves from the shoreline; c) level of awareness of the respondents on the importance of mangroves; and d) extent of practice of different activities affecting mangrove cover in the area.
The study made used of the field research method through quadrat method in determining the percentage mangrove cover of the coastal areas distance of mangroves from the shoreline; and descriptive research design in determining the level of awareness on the importance of mangroves and the extent of practice of different activities affecting mangrove cover. There are 210 respondents of the study. Personal interviews with the aid of prepared questionnaires and personal observations were engaged to gather the data. Frequency counts, percentages, means, analysis of variance and pairwise mean comparison and correlation were used in the analysis of data.
Result showed that there is a limited mangrove cover along the coastal areas of the Municipality of Bacnotan comprising 33.64% mangrove vegetation from 48.25 meters distance from the shoreline. The other 66.36% comprises bare soil, grass area and land uses like residential and public cemetery. There is significant difference on the percentage of mangrove cover among barangays. There is moderate negative relationship between percentage mangrove cover and distance of mangroves from shoreline. Respondents are moderately aware on the importance of mangroves as indicated with a grand mean of 3.20. There is significant difference on the level of awareness on the importance of mangroves among barangays. Respondents moderately practiced the different activities affecting mangrove cover with grand mean of 2.64. There is significant difference among and between barangays on the different practices affecting vegetation cover. Mangroves are now being degraded because of establishments like residential houses that affect the mangrove covers in the coastal areas.
