Honey production and marketing practices of La Union beekeepers

dc.description.abstractThis study was conducted to determine (1) socio-demographic characteristics of beekeepers , (2) production and marketing practices; and (3) problems encountered by the respondents. The data were gathered from 15 La Union active beekeepers from January to February 2014 with an aid of structured interview questionnaire schedule. Findings of the study revealed that the respondents were at their late 40’s, married with 3 children, mostly college graduates and were employed in the government service. Beekeeping was undertaking as additional source of income using personal savings. Honey were produce mainly through colonies migration investing P18,258.38 which generated 110-281 kg valued at P33, 000 – P84, 000. Beekeepers followed mostly the recommended honey production practices along apiary site selection, bee colony stock s selection, supporting the bee colonies, migrating bee colonies, and harvesting and processing of honey. Honey moisture content, flavor, clarity were used as basis for honey grading. Glass bottles were used for packaging honeys that were mostly sold to direct consumers. Among the very serious problem identified by the respondents include: (1) limited source nectar and pollen; (2) difficulty in controlling bee predator birds; (3) irregular climate change pattern; and (4) unpredictable volume of production. Considered serious problem were: (1) limited start-up capital; (2) limited source of beekeeping supplies and materials; (3) low buying prices of honey; (4) expensive packaging bottles; (5) expensive beekeeping supplies and materials; and (6) difficulty in satisfying buyers demand on volume of honey.
