dc.description.abstractThe major constraints of the Philippine dairy sector were shortage of dairy stock and limited industry entrants and also competition with cheap imported milk products. This study was conducted to 28 dairy raisers in the second district of La Union to determine: (1) The socio-demographic profile of the raiser, (2) The average number of the dairy animal raised per raiser and management practices to produce milk in the second district of La Union (3)The market channels of the milk product and (4) The production and marketing problems in milk. The descriptive-survey research through formal interview was used in gathering information to the dairy raisers in the second district of La Union using structured questionnaire. Survey and interview instruments were also used to strengthen the study. Based on the result on producer’s profile, most of the respondents were male and married and attained secondary education with farming as their major occupation Majority of the respondents raised 1-5 heads of dairy animals and Italian breed of dairy buffalo. Majority of the respondents tethered their dairy animals, used the shade of the tree as animal shelter and practiced the breeding method of Artificial Insemination. Majority of the respondents milk their animals early in the morning, once a day and do not practice pasteurization; however, they all conduct mastitis test for their dairy animals. The major problem in the management of their dairy animal is lack of equipment and facilities. Majority of the respondents sold fresh milk with a price of Php50 to Php60/liter. The major problem of marketing is less production of milk to supply the demand of the costumers.
