dc.description.abstractThis thesis entitled "Nutritional Status and the Academic Performance of Senior High School Students of President Elpidio Quirino National High School, Agoo, La Union, SY 1999 - 2000: A Correlates" was prepared by Catherine C. Villamin and Gina R Onbello under the advisorship of Professor Engracia G. Ronquillo dary school of PEQNHS, and its relationship to their academic performance. More specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: What is the demographic profile of the fourth year high school students of PEQNHS along the following variables; age, sex, family size, family monthly income, parents' educational attainment and parents' occupational level; What is the level of nutritional status of fourth year high school students of PEQNHS along the following variables; weight and height; What is the level of performance of the fourth year students during the school year 1999 - 2000 as reflected in form 137; Is there a significant relationship between the demographic profile of the fourth year high school students and their academic performance and; Is there a significant relationship between the level of nutritional status and their academic performance as to weight and height. This study tested the hypothesis that there is significant relationship between the academic performance and nutritional status of the senior high school students. The descriptive research method with the questionnaire as data gathering instrument was utilized in the research. The respondents consisted of 104 senior high school students. The data obtained through questionnaire were tallied and tabulated in terms of frequency counts and given their corresponding percentages. With the aid variables age, sex, family size, monthly family income, parent' educational attainment and parents' occupational level, height-weight-standards by the FNRI, and the Grade Point Average from first year to third year, the relationship between the academic performance and nutritional status were statistically analyzed using the Chi - Square Test of Independence at .05 level of significance. The salient findings of the study indicate that majority of the respondents age 17 years old. Males outnumber the females. Most respondents belonged to moderate family size. Majority of the respondents' parents fell on the low occupational level. The level of income per- month is from 5,000 to 9,999 and below. Under nutritional profile, the respondents are mostly underweight. There are slightly more normal respondents compared to underheight and overheight. At least 62 of the respondents belonged to average achievers group. There was no significant relationship between the academic performance of the students and that of their nutritional levels both in terms of height and weight. Academic performance was not significantly related to the age, family size, monthly family income, parents' educational attainment, and parents' occupational level. However it was also found out that there is a significant relationship between sex and academic performance of respondents respectively. Consequently, it was concluded that academic performance of the respondents was not influenced by their nutritional levels both in terms of height and weight. Age, family size, monthly family income, parents' educational attainment and occupational level were not the problems regarding academic performance of the students. However, there is a significant relationship between the academic performance of the respondents and that of their sex. It is recommended therefore that schools, especially high schools, should sponsor training courses or workshops in nutrition for students as well as for parents whereby they will learn more about food selection, preparation and serving. technology and Home Economics teachers should be involved in food and nutrition projects. School cafeteria! canteen, should sell only those foods that are nutritious to supplement the home diets. The .school administrators, teachers and the students themselves should plan and implement programs to improve the nutritional status of the students. Nutrition education should be given top priority in the implementation of the DECS curricular thrusts. A thorough follow up of their academic underachievers should be part of the regular supervisory program.
