Perceptions of La Union farmers on the privatization of the National Food Authority

dc.description.abstractThe study was conducted to: (1) determine the demographic profile of the respondents; (2) determine the perception of La Union farmers on the performance of the National Food Authority; (3) determine the level of acceptability of the requirements of the National Food Authority in buying grains from the farmers; (4) determine the level of satisfaction of the services of the National Food Authority; and (5) determine the probable conditions that would happen if National Food Authority would be privatized. The study was conducted from December 2006 to January 2007. It was limited in scope to determining the perception of La Union farmers on the privatization of the National Food Authority. There were 108 respondents taken from 18 selected barangays from 6 randomly selected towns with 3 respondents in each barangay. The researcher personally administered the pre-test of the questionnaire. Two weeks later, she administered the final floating and interview schedule. All the responses were tallied, consolidated, categorized, and statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results revealed that rice, corn and other grain-crop growing in La Union was generally perceived as an activity of men (67.59%), mostly belonged to small families, married (82.41%), middle age (27.97%) with an age range of 39-45 years of age. A little more than two-thirds (32.41%) of the respondents were college graduates. Fifty nine or (54.63%) were part time farmers which belonged to the average income earner group (31.00%), ranging between P10, 000 – P15, 000.00. They claimed that they had been in the farming trade for 11-12 years. Sixty-seven or (62.00%) claimed membership to farmer’s organization. A little less than two-thirds or (37.04%) owned the land they are cultivating. Fifty-nine or (54.63%) claimed that they were fully aware on the existence of the National Food Authority. Sixty-three or (58.33%) were active in knowing the promotion and development of grain crops and 78 or 72.22% were fully aware about the programs regulation, monitoring and evaluation of NFA outlet stores. However, a little less than one-half or (45.37%) was not happy or satisfied about the overall performance of NFA. Farmers prefer accepting grains with low moisture content, However, they were not satisfied with the current pricing of their produce. Excellent and good quality grains are expected on the onset of its privatization but grains prices are projected to become skyrocketed and rice and corn cartel and hoarding proliferates.
