This study was conducted to determine the producers and farm profile, production and marketing practices, profitability, cost of ginger and problems encountered by the ginger producer-respondents. Thirty-two (32) ginger producers in 2004 from Barangay Lacong, Lipay Norte, Lipay Proper, and Lipay Este, San Gabriel, La Union interviewed with use of interview schedule. Findings revealed that the respondents were 51.95 years on the average, majority was female, married with household members of five. Majority of them high school graduate. An average of .06 hectare of land was planted to ginger, which was located some 2.90 kilometers away from roads. The respondents usually planted ginger from April to June with out plowing. Instead, hand-digging tools were used in planting. Seed pieces treatment, fertilizer and farm chemicals applications were not practiced. Ginger crops were harvested from December to January with a computed average yield of 10, 240.72 kilograms per hectare. Harvested ginger rhizomes were dried for two days after which were graded according to size and appearance, packed using sacks, and then sold to buyers immediately. Among the ginger buyers were retailers, wholesalers, wholesaler-retailers, or contract buyers who paid on cash upon pick up or delivery. Low productivity and low buying price by middlemen were the serious problems encountered by ginger producers.
