Abstract
This study was conducted to: (1) establish the reference range of apparently healthy Philippine native dogs 8 months old and above in Bacnotan, La Union regardless of socio-economic status of owners and season or time of year; (2) determine the difference in the blood counts of dogs as affected by manual versus automated methods; (3) determine if there is a significant difference between blood counts of Philippine native dogs as affected by age, sex, and geographic location. Blood samples acquired from a total of 45 randomly selected, apparently healthy Philippine native dogs 8 months and above from the highest location (Barangay Arosip), a coastal area (Sitio Paratong) and the town proper (Centro, Poblacion) at Bacnotan, La Union were analyzed at three (3) different laboratories with one laboratory using automated methods and the other two analyzing the samples manually. Comparison of ranges in all methods revealed hemoglobin and hematocrit means as significantly lower in the automated method. White blood cell counts showed no significant difference in the 3 laboratories. Segmented neutrophil, eosinophil, lymphocyte and monocyte means showed significant difference in the 3 laboratories. Their ranges were significantly different from the established range. Hemoglobin mean values obtained in both manual and automated methods were within the established range. Results from the IVM laboratory showed a significant difference in eosinophil counts with the adults having the largest percentage mean although the absolute values were within the established range. Hemoglobin of senior dogs as obtained by Laboratory B was significantly lower than the adult and adolescent dogs. Lymphocyte counts were significantly different in all age groups with the senior dogs having the highest mean and the lowest in adult dogs. Means of segmented neutrophil, eosinophil and lymphocyte counts as analyzed by Laboratory A through automated methods was significantly different in all age groups. In the manual methods, white blood cell counts were highest in the adults and lowest in the adolescent dogs. Lymphocyte counts were higher in adolescent dogs as obtained from the IVM laboratory. There was no significant difference seen in the blood counts between male and female dogs in all laboratories. As for the geographic location, significant difference was seen in the eosinophil and monocyte counts of Philippine native dogs as acquired by Laboratory A and Laboratory B.
