| dc.description.abstract | The study dealt with the determination of the histopathological changes in the small intestines of the mice as induced by Lantana camara L. leaf crude extract. This study utilized the experimental method of research that focused on the use of standard laboratory procedure such as extraction of plant material. The test organisms used in the study were 54, 3- month- old, ICR strain female mice. Six treatments were utilized namely, To - negative control, 0.25 m1 distilled water, Tl - solvent control, 0.25 m1 PBS, T2 - positive, control, O.20'm1 ethanol; T3 - 25 mg/kg mouse; T4 - 50 mg/kg mouse; and Ts - 75 mg/kg mouse. The effects of the extract observed in the small intestines of mice both present in the duodenum and ileum were the following: blunting of villi and/or narrowing of villi, erosion/effusion of villi, sloughing off of villi, presence of inflammatory cells like neutrophils, macrophages, lymphocytes and plasma cells, presence of cellular debris in the lumen, absence of lymphatic nodules, thinning of serosa, presence of poorly demarcated glands, necrosis of submucosa, necrotic glands and lymphocytic infiltration around glands and krypts. The percentage of organisms with tissue abnormalities in the duodenum and ileum were determined by counting the number of organisms with tissue abnormality divided by the total number of the organisms-examined multiplied by 100. The data was subjected to the One-Way Analysis of Variance. Results of the ANOVA showed that the differences among the treatment means were highly significant for both duodenum and ileum. The Duncan's Multiple Range Test was used to test the relationship among the treatment means. For the duodenum, results of the DMRT showed that the treatments containing different concentration of L. camara L. leaf crude extract, 25 mg/kg mouse, 50 mg/kg mouse and 75 mg/kg mouse have comparable effects and were the most potent treatments in causing. abnormalities. This was followed by the positive control; 0.20 m1 ethanol then the negative control, 0.25 m1 distilled water. Their effects were not comparable to each other or to the other treatments. The solvent control, 0.25 m1 PBS had the least potent effect in causing abnormality to the duodenum and its effect was not comparable to the other treatments. For the ileum, DMRT results showed that the two treatments with the highest concentration of L. camara L. leaf crude extract, 75 mg/kg mouse and 50 mg/kg mouse have comparable effects and were the most potent treatments in causing abnormalities. This was followed by the positive control, 0.20 m1 ethanol then the treatment with the lowest concentration of the extract, 25 mgjkg lJlouse. However, their effects were not comparable to each other or to the other treatments. The negative and solvent controls, 0.25 m1 distilled water and 0.25 m1 PBS have comparable effects and were the least potent in causing tissue abnormalities-in the ileum. | |
