Abstract
Drying process is essential for seaweeds(gracilaria) before they are sold to
processors. This study was conducted to design, fabricate, and evaluate the performance of a seaweed dryer. The machine’s performance was assessed in terms of drying capacity and recovery at three different temperatures (50°C, 60°C, and 70°C) as the treatments.
The study employed Completely Randomized Design in the performance evaluation of the seaweed dryer. Three trials were conducted for each treatment, using 2,500g per batch of seaweeds as test material. The weight of the seaweeds was monitored every 30 minutes until the desired weight was attained.
The drying capacity ranged from 243.902 kg/hr to 384.615 kg/hr depending on the drying temperature. Moreover, the same trend was observed for drying efficiency which range from 66.67% to 86.67%. The drying recovery of T1 was the highest at 16.96% indicating product with higher moisture content.
