Abstract
Parasitism causes devastating effect on animal production and over-all health. Medicinal plants were recognized in treating and preventing diseases. Squash seeds, a waste product proven effective against gastrointestinal parasites in human, proving its effect in animals.
Fifty Philippine native chickens were distributed into five treatments. The emulsion was prepared by grinding the squash seeds mixed with water. Administration of the different treatments was made at day 1 and repeated at day 14.
Fecal samples were collected and examined before the start of the study and at day 1, 3, 14, 21, and 28 post-treatment. Necropsy was done to identify the species and confirm the presence of adult gastrointestinal helminths.
The gastrointestinal helminths affecting the experimental chickens were Ascaridia, Heterakis, Capillaria, and Choanotaenia species. Treatment 3 (5ml emulsified squash seeds/kg body weight) was highly effective and most effective dose against gastrointestinal helminths of Philippine Native chicken.
