| dc.description.abstract | The study investigated the factors that may have contributed to the improvement of living conditions of the Rural Folks of Agoo. Particularly, it sought to address the following: (a) the socio-demographic profile of the respondents; (b) their beliefs and attitudes as this affect their living conditions; (c) their aspirations and how they work to achieve them: and (d) the relationship between their attitudes, beliefs and their sociodemographic profile. An interview schedule was used in order to gather the data from the respondents composed of 160 fishermen and farmers who come from the depressed barangays of Balawarte, Macalva, San Isidro. and San Manuel. Data gathered were tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted using corresponding measure and statistical treatments. With regard to the socio-demographic profile of the respondents, result shows that more males were interviewed. They have an average age of 48 years old, mostly married and were able to finish elementary and high school and of Roman Catholic as their religion. The respondents belong to a family of at least three to four children. They were either fishermen or farmers who cover an income less than P3000.00 monthly, considered insufficient in meeting their needs. They live in a house made of permanent materials. Radio and television is the common appliances owned. Farmer- respondents have an average landholding of less than one hectare, which they plant with paly, com, tobacco, cassava. mongo. sitaw, and leafy vegetables using the traditional plow and horrow. Fishermen respondents earn below P3000.00 monthly from heir catch which they sell n the market. Belief variables were rated categorically by Fishermen and Farmer respondents with "agree" and "strongly agree" and attitudes were also rated with "agree" and "strongly agree". They aspire for being the asset of the community in every opportunity the can. Education was considered to be the number one factor that would help them achieve their aspirations. Relationship of variables yields the following, home ownership and nature of ownership was related to the attitudes, education, and nature of ownership was related in the beliefs. It was concluded in the study that the typical rural folks of Agoo is either male or female who is about 48 years old, an elementary graduate, married and of Catholic by religion. He has at least three family members with at least one to two children and about other members living in his house. He has been engaged in such occupation for at last 13 years and derived an income less than P3000.00 monthly. He lives in house he calls his own which is made of hollow blocks and galvanized iron. Fishermen and farmer respondents are considered small time workers who eam an income from the traders sufficient only for their basic needs. They live simple lives, generally. they lives of beliefs. attitudes. and aspirations are average which means that they are neither too conventional nor too modern. Thus, they can be receptive to change and other forms of development. | |
