Reading level of grade two pupils: a basis for developing a reading intervention material
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus, 2016-12) Zapanta, Amparo M.
This descriptive developmental research studied the degree of reading levels in Iloko of Grade Two pupils as basis for developing a reading intervention material. It analyzed the phonemic awareness-phoneme segmentation, letter-sound knowledge, familiar word identification, simple nonword decoding, passage reading and comprehension and listening comprehension. Respondents were 100 pupils from the elementary schools in Bacnotan. Data were gathered using EGRA and treated using frequency counts and weighted means. Scales were used to interpret the results of each task and a validation tool was used to determine its validity. Results showed that pupils are fair in phonemic awareness-phoneme segmentation, familiar word identification, simple nonword decoding and passage reading and comprehension; poor in letter-sound knowledge; lastly, good in listening comprehension and passage reading. A reading intervention material was crafted to improve the pupils’ reading level in Iloko; Based on the results of validation, the reading intervention material is highly valid.
