Awareness And Prevalence of Needle Stick Injury Among Nurses in the District Hospitals of La Union

Needle stick injuries (NSI) were recognized as one of the world's most common health risks. In the pursuit of their daily tasks in the health care setting, nurses were at high risk of occupational accidents and injury. The study was conducted to assess the needle stick injury among nurses in district hospitals in La Union. Specifically, it sought to evaluate the awareness of nurses regarding needle stick injury; to describe the prevalence of needle stick injury among nurses in La Union District Hospitals; and to review existing district hospital protocols on the management of needle stick injury. Frequency counts and percentage were used to analyze the data. Nurses were aware on needle stick injury. There was a high prevalence of needle stick injury due to recapping for the past five years. District hospitals had protocols guided by the World Health Organization and Department of Health on Needle Stick Injury.
