Item Effective microorganisms as remediation for marginal soil in the Philippines(Chemical Engineering Transactions, 2020-02-01) Ngilangil, Leonora E.; Vilar, Desiree A.The use of effective microorganisms (EM) technology is rapidly gaining popularity not only in agricultural development but also in environmental management. In this study, EM were used as remediation for marginal soil. Formulated EM from fish amino acid, lactic acid bacterial serum, and commercial EM were applied to marginal soil weekly for 10 weeks. The physical and chemical properties were analysed before and after treatment application. With the objectives of determining the change, results revealed that there was a change on the selected physical and chemical properties of the soil. Soil texture has changed from light to medium in all treatments. The highest increase in pH (5.4 %), organic matter content (200 %) and phosphorous content (115.7 %) was noted in fish amino acid; while the highest increase in electrical conductivity (514.3 %) and potassium content (89.1 %) was noted in the commercial EM. Effective microorganisms can be utilized to remediate soil problems in relation to improvements on soil texture, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and phosphorous content.Item Environmental protection through the “Grinning Bulilit” project in Bacnotan, La Union, Philippines(Italian Association of Chemical Engineering - AIDIC, 2018) Andrada, Jacklyn C.; Ngilangil, Leonora E.; Vilar, Desiree A.; Lucena, Jomar J.The growing concern about the deteriorating condition of the environment in the Philippines and even worldwide is alarming. Providing the children with environmental education at the earliest possible age could significantly help in imbibing the environmentally-oriented values in them, for example, the implementation of “Grinning Bulilit” project in elementary schools of Bacnotan, La Union, Philippines. The project implementation provided and enhanced pupils' natural science background and experiences which are needed to make environmentally responsible decisions. The pupils were transformed from kids with low level of environmental literacy to committed and responsible citizens. The leadership skills of the BS Environmental Science students were significantly developed as they acted as facilitators/resource speakers. These altogether contributed in paving the way towards environmental protection system within the municipality. Over-abstraction due to high demands for domestic water supply is the main cause of saltwater intrusion. This can also be accelerated by the rise in sea level due to climate change and global warming. This reduces the fresh groundwater resources. With the impact of sea level rise and over-pumping combined together, the problem becomes even more serious. A large part of the province of La Union in the Ilocos Region, Northern Philippines is lying along the coastline, with its community stakeholders depending on wells for their source of water. Considering the safety of users, the study aimed to determine the incidence of saltwater intrusion in the coastal communities of La Union. In this study, the descriptive-qualitative research design was used. A questionnaire was formulated to determine the perceptions of the community stakeholders on the quality of water they are using but their responses were verified by the use of salinity meter to test the actual water salinity from the tube wells. Through the use of handheld Global Positioning System (GPS), the geographical coordinates depicting the location of the wells included in the study were identified. There was a total of 42 barangays selected as study sites. Using quota sampling, a total of 420 tube wells were subjected to analysis. A geographical map of tube wells showing the affected areas served as an output of the study. The research revealed that salt intrusion already exists into tube wells along coastal areas of La Union. Community stakeholders had already resorted to other sources/means for their water consumption. Copyright © 2018, AIDIC Servizi S.r.l.Item Sanitation practices of wet markets in the First District of La Union(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – North La Union Campus, 2017-05) Abat, Rachel M.; Andrada, Jacklyn C.; Ngilangil, Leonora E.; Vilar, Desiree A.; Lucena, Jomar J.Sanitation issues are a major concern in many workplaces because they contribute to health problems among employees, customers and others. This study aimed to determine the sanitation practices of the wet markets in the first district of La Union. Descriptive survey method of research was used through the aid of questionnaire and supplemented by interview and observation. Two hundred fifty (250) vendors and nine (9) administrators were selected as respondents, using stratified random sampling and purposive sampling, respectively. Frequency counts, percentages and means were used in the analysis of data. The research shows that vendors are very much aware on sanitation practices employed in the wet markets and have highly adopted it. The availability of sanitary facilities was noted. However, there is a slightly serious problem on the inadequacy of water supply.
