    Drying of Brown Marine Alagae (Sargassum) using sun drying and solar drying methods

    Preservation of agricultural produce is one of the central problems faced by developing countries. And as time goes on, these problems will be aggravated by the growing dietary needs of the ever increasing population of these countries. Drying is an important form of food preservation that is often carried out at farm level right after harvest, or especially with highly perishable crops, at peak harvest time when local markets are saturated. Seaweed is regarded for its many uses to enhance the preparation of processing for its future use. The study aimed to determine the best drying method for Brown Marine Algae Sargassum using the solar dryers and sun drying and to evaluate the quality of the dried seaweeds in terms of color and texture. ANOVA was used to analyze the three treatments with four replications each. The result showed that seaweed can be dried for 2-3 days to achieve the maximum weight loss, In terms of color quality T3 (direct sun drying) got the highest rating of 4.47 with a descriptive equivalent of very dark brown while T1 solar dried covered with transparent polyethylene plastic got the rating of 3.50 with a descriptive equivalent of dark brown and T2 solar dried covered with black polyethylene plastic got the rating of 3.50 with a descriptive equivalent of dark brown. Result showed that the solar dryer with transparent plastic cover had the highest temperature and relative humidity, also showed significant result in weight loss and in sensory evaluation of the dried seaweed.
