(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University -Open University System, 2023) Umel, Agatha P.; Pascua, Leah C.; Sanggawa, Eduardo M.
Multipurpose cooperatives play an important role in the economic and social development of rural areas. They provide in a range of services to farmers, including access to credit, marketing assistance, and technical support. This study assesses the key roles of multi-purpose cooperatives in the first District of La Union, Philippines. The study used a descriptive survey method to collect data from 88 respondents who are members of multipurpose cooperatives in the First District of La Union. The survey results showed that the majority of the respondents were female, aged 26-50 years old, married and college graduates. Most of the respondents were also members of the cooperative for more than six years. The respondents expressed a high degree of satisfaction with the services provided by the cooperative. The cooperatives were successful in promoting their services and engaging their members in their activities. Membership in the cooperatives has resulted in higher incomes and grater access to loans, which have increased crops and improved farm production. The study concludes that multi-purpose cooperatives play an important role in the First District of La Union. The findings indicate the importance of considering the demographic profiles of cooperative members when accessing their key roles and identifying strategies to improve their participation and sustainability. It is essential to promote gender equality and women's empowerment in cooperatives, consider the age distribution of members, and ensure continued participation and engagement of members with less than a year of membership. Furthermore, cooperative management should also recognize the educational and income levels of members to develop programs and services that are relevant and accessible to them.
