In vitro shoot multiplication and bulbing of garlic (Allium sativum L. var. Mexican) as affected by types of explants
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University- North La Union Campus, 2024-05) Sibayan, Moizyen M.
Garlic usually propagated through its cloves, it is one of the industrial food crops for which the in vitro plant propagation method has been extensively used. This study was conducted to establish In vitro rapid multiplication for shoot induction and bulblets formation of garlic as affected by types of explants. It was conduct at the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory of DMMMSU NLUC, Bacnotan, La Union from November 2022 to April 2023. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments and replicated three times. The different types of explant that were used as treatment were as follows: T1- Whole shoot tip; T2 – Split shoot tip and T3- Stem disc. The study revealed that split shoot tip explant produced shoot the earliest with a mean of 10.20 – 20.67 days, highest number of shoots with a mean of 2.95 – 3.37 , and number of roots with a mean of 1.42 – 2.85 after the 30 to 60 days of Sub-culturing. However, longer shoots were produced from whole shoot tip with a mean of 253.25 – 175.25. Furthermore, in terms of bulb formation, no significant difference were observed on the number of shoots that produced bulb, number of days to bulbing, and weight of bulblets while significant differences were observed on the number of days to maturity between whole shoot tip and split shoot tip.
