    Production practices of Tiger grass in Santol, La Union: A baseline study

    This study was conducted to determinethe (1) socio-demographic characteristics the tiger grass production profile activities, problem encountered, tiger grass grower’s recommendations, (2) determine farm profile and farm activities, (3) determine extent of problems encountered, and (4) draw recommendations from the respondents in solving identified problems. The data were gathered from 120 tiger grass growersin five Barangays of Santol LaUnion from December 2014 to January 2015 with an aid of structured interview schedule. The tiger grass growers were at their prime productive life, mostly male, married with 4. 46 children and living in a household with 6.45 members. Most of the tiger grass growers were full-time farmers earning about PhP 5, 983.80 per month. The farm size planted to tiger grass was 0.42 hectare could with an average of production of 1,374 pieces of softbrooms valued at PhP 41, 220.00. Serious problems identified were pest and diseases infestation of tiger grass plants, decreasing tiger grass panicle yield, and low buying price by middlemen. Respondents recommended (1) setting up of common local storage facilities, (2) formation cooperatives/association, (3) provision of marketing assistance services, (4) credit assistance, and (5) development of techo-guide for tiger grass industry.
