    Efficacy of emulsified squash (Cucurbita maxima) seeds against gastrointestinal helminthes of philippine native chicken (Gallus domesticus)

    This study was conducted to: (1identify the different species of gastrointestinal helminthes affecting the experimental native chicken; (2) determine the efficacy of emulsified Squash (Cucurbita maxima) seeds against gastrointestinal helminthes of Philippine native chicken (Gallus domesticus), and (3) determine the therapeutic dose of emulsified Squash (Cucurbita maxima) seeds against gastrointestinal helminthes of Philippine native chicken (Gallus domesticus). Fifty (50) Philippine native chickens were used in the study. The chickens were randomly distributed into five (5) treatments wherein each treatment contains ten (10) chickens. One (1) chicken in each treatment was necropsied before administering the dosage in each treatment making it 9 chickens on each treatment. The remaining 9 chickens in each treatment were distributed into three blocks following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD).Treatments used were as follows: T0- - negative control (no treatment) T0+ - positive control (Mebendazole, Niclosamide, and Levamisole combination) T1 - 2ml emulsified Squash (Cucurbita maxima) seeds/kg body weight T2- 3ml emulsified Squash (Cucurbita maxima) seeds/ kg body weight T3-4ml emulsified Squash (Cucurbita maxima) seeds/ kg body weight Prior to the administration of different treatments, fecal examination was done to determine the pre- treatment EPG count and the species of gastrointestinal helminthes present and necropsy was done to confirm the presence of gastrointestinal helminthes. The experimental chickens were treated once with the designated dosage in each treatment. Fecal examinations were done on days 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 post treatment. Necropsy was done on day 28 post treatment and adult worms were identified. The gastrointestinal helminthes affecting the experimental native chickens were Ascaridia species, Heterakis species, Capillaria species, and Choanotaenia species. All treatments with emulsified squash seeds were able to reduce the EPG count of gastrointestinal helminthes of Philippine native chicken. Treatment 3 (4 ml emulsified squash seeds/ kg body weight) was the most effective (86.42%) treatment in reducing gastrointestinal helminthes of native chicken on day 21 post treatment. However, no treatment was able to reach the therapeutic level of 90 percent and above as set by WAAVP (Yazwinski, 2003).
