Publication Preventive practices on Acute Gastroenteritis among the residents of barangay Balwarte, Agoo, La Union(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus, 2010-03) Abrogar, Ryan Dominic Ferdinand C.; Navalta, Jenelyn P.; Revillosa, Khraisalain Edneth S.; Rivera, Vanessa F.; Rivo, Grayman P.; Rojas, John Paul M.The study was conducted to determine the preventive practices of the leading health problem of the residents of Barangay Balawarte, Agoo, La Union which was Acute Gastroenteritis. The study was conducted in Barangay Balawarte, Agoo, La Union, which had 7 sitios consisted of 232 families. The Slovin's formula, with 0.05 margin of error, was used in obtaining the target population (n) of the study which was 147 head of households. The respondents were selected by means of simple random sampling. The hypothesis of the study "profile of the respondents has no significant relationship with the preventive practices". The study was conducted during the months of June to March, school year 2009-2010, by ICHAMS students group 4A (HalfStrength). The study focused on the preventive practices on Acute Gastroenteritis among the residents of Barangay Balawarte, Agoo, La Union. It was limited on determining the profile of the residents according to: gender, age, educational attainment & occupation. The study catered different types of ethnic group. Questionnaires were the main source of data gathering, which means the answer of the respondents may have lacked depth and explanations. The study focused on the 147 head of households among 232 families of Barangay Balawarte, Agoo, La Union; male or female; ages 12-65, as respondents. They may/may not have background on Acute Gastroenteritis and had experienced it in their house within six (6) months. The study aimed to know or determine the preventive practices on Acute Gastroenteritis among the residents of Barangay Balawarte, Agoo, La Union. Specifically, it sought answers to the questions: What is the profile of the residents of Barangay Balawarte in terms of age, gender, educational attainment and occupation? What are the preventive practices on Acute Gastroenteritis among the residents of Barangay Balawarte, Agoo, La Union? Is there a significant relationship between the profile and the preventive practices on Acute Gastroenteritis among the residents of Barangay Balawarte, Agoo, La Union? The residents of Barangay Balawarte served as the respondents to answer the research, preventive practices and the significant relationship of the respondents profile to the preventive practices on AGE. The study utilized the descriptive survey design with the use of questionnaire, which describes and interpret the data gathered. The particular study was designed to find out whether a relationship existed between and among the variables being studied. The statistical tools used for the data gathered were frequency and percentages. The test of significance was done at 0.05 level of significance. The Pearson's R moment of correlation was used to determine the relationship of variables using the statistical procedure for social sciences (SPSS). Findings revealed that as to gender of the respondents most of them are females. They belonged to the age bracket of 20-44. As to their educational attainment, majority are elementary graduates. Most of them are laborers wherein most females are housewives and most of the males are fishermen. Majority of the respondents use pit as their method of garbage disposal, a high significance revealed as to gender where in females highly practiced the use of pit. Most of them use water-sealed type comfort rooms for waste disposal. With the type of drainage they have, open drainage is mostly used, wherein a high significance is revealed as to their educational attainment. Those with lower educational attainment highly practice the use of open drainage. The water pump was the main source of drinking water for the respondents. Females showed significance with the source of drinking water. Those in the managerial and labor services showed significance in preparing their food, most of them made sure that their utensils are washed with a dishwashing cleaner. They prefer to eat well- cooked food for their meal. Because females are mostly the ones buying their food, they showed sigrtifica.i1.ceon chocking the expiration date of processed foods. The respondents prefer to eat junk food than street food for their snack because of its availability and there is no carinderia in the area. More than half of the respondents boil their drinking water. All of them highly practice the use of soap in hand washing.
