    Water resource management practices of indigenous upland dwellers in San Gabriel, La Union

    This study aimed to determine the water resource management practices in the upland area of San Gabriel, La Union. Specifically, This study aimed to determine: (1) the demographic profile of the respondents, (2) effects of water conservation and water resource practices, (3) water resource management practices adopted, (4) soil and water conservation practices adopted for the improvement of water quality and quantity in their watershed area, and (5) determined the degree of seriousness of problems encountered in water resource management. This study was conducted in selected barangay’s of San Gabriel, La Union from October 2011 to January 2012. The data were drawn with the aid of survey questionnaire from the 140 respondents who were selected using random sampling. It was analyzed using the descriptive tools like frequency counts, mean, rank and percentage. Based on the result of the study, mean age is 45, majority of them are females and married. Majority of the respondents belong to the kankanaey tribe, almost one fourth finished high school and 9.29% are college graduate as well as elementary graduates. Majority of them are involved in farming as their occupation. Most of the respondents perceive that the production of abundant supply of water for the community is the effect of proper water conservation that was ranked first. For the water resource management practices, most of the respondents practiced much the used of water tank with water pipes, while use of bamboo flumes was the lease practiced. Among the soil and water conservation practice, majority of the respondents adopted tree planting/reforestation for the improvement of water quality and quantity in their watershed area. The decreasing amount of water for their crops, which they thought, led to low production of rice rated was serious problem followed by water rights which was sometimes a serious problem encountered with regards to water resource management. The least encountered problem was the increasing contamination of water from domestic, agriculture and industrial waste.
