Integrated farming systems among Benedictine communities in the Philippines

The Ordo Sancti Benedicti or Order of St. Benedict are a monastic communities known by their balance life of “Ora et Labora” (Pray and Work). Benedictines have always been associated with agriculture vis-a-vis preaching. Agricultural products sustain them. This study was conducted in 11 selected Benedictine Communities having three respondents from every community operating an integrated farming in Luzon and Mindanao respectively from October 2015 – January 2016 with the use of descriptive survey research method. Majority of the respondents belong to women communities with 31 – 50 members. Most of them are practicing integrated farming for more than 50 years now. Aside from the farm products the other sources of income are from processed products such as fresh milk, brewed coffee herbal medicines, people’s donation, stipends/honorarium, retreat houses and gift shop or religious items store. Native chicken, vegetables and fruits are the common integration. Majority are using natural or organic way of crops and livestock production. Crop products are for community consumption but if production is high it is sold to the vendors in the nearby market while swine are sold through retailers/market vendors in a live weight basis.
