    Perceived competitiveness of locally produced Vis-a-vis imported agricultural prodcuts in Ilocos Sur

    Considering the adverse effects of importation on the local economy of Ilocos Sur, this study was conducted specifically to: (1) determine how many were aware and in favor in the importation of agricultural products such as rice, onion, garlic, grapes, and corn; (2) determine the favorability and preference of consumers between imported and local products; (3) compare locally produced and imported rice, onion, garlic, grapes, and corn as to: price, taste/ aroma, color, size, shelf life, texture, packaging, and chemically laden; (4) determine the perceived possible, positive, and negative effects of importation to the behavior of farmers, consumers, and local government employees; (5) determine problems met in the consumption of the different crops; (6) determine the level of importance of some perceived strategies on how to minimize importation in Ilocos Sur; and (7) develop a strategic plan in marketing locally produced crops and imported crops in Ilocos Sur. Result showed that most farmers, local government employees and consumers were aware on the importation of some agricultural products thus most of the farmers and local government employees were not in favor of it. However, most of the consumers preferred the imported grapes, rice and garlic and locally produced onion and corn. While the consumers and local government employees believed that the imported products have lower price than the local ones, the farmers believed otherwise. However, they all claimed that locally produced products have better taste and aroma, size, shelf life, packaging, and contain lesser chemical preservative. In contrast to the claim of the farmers and local government employees, the consumers believed that the imported products have better color and texture. Similarly, the local government employees and consumers claimed locally produced products had better taste, aroma, color and texture, and less chemical content. On the other hand, they asserted that imported products had lower pricing, better packaging, longer shelf life and bigger size. Importation is believed that it has much effect on the local economy; hence, it should be minimized. It poses threat to the competitiveness of the locally produced products, decrease on the income and low bargaining power of farmers. The consumers claimed that locally produced products were more expensive yet lower in standard. To combat the adverse effect of importation, the strategies need to be put in place.
