Effectiveness of chitin extracted from crab shells in dperf wastewater treatment
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2005-03) Otanes, Rommel O.
This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of chitin extracted from crab shells in DPERF wastewater treatment. It was conducted at the laboratory room of Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), in Lingsat, San Fernando City, La Union. DPERF wastewater samples were collected and analyzed then treated with chitin cakes. After three days and seven days standing period, the treatments were analyzed. Wastewater samples before and after treatment were brought to Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Lingsat, San Fernando, La Union. The experimental treatments used were the following: T₀ – 300 ml wastewater (control) T₁ – 300 ml wastewater + 30 g chitin cakes T₃ – 300 ml wastewater + 50 g chitin cakes T₃ – 300 ml wastewater + 80 g chitin cakes T-test was used to determine the differences among treatments and between three days and seven days standing period using various water parameters. The initial value of the parameters tested changed after treatment. All treatments decreased in the amount of phosphate and nitrate levels in wastewater. This maybe due to the natural tendency of chitin to bind with organic materials and other contaminants in water. The differences on phosphate and nitrate levels before treatment and after three days and seven days standing period revealed significant differences among the treatments. This indicates that chitin from crab shells has the capability to reduce phosphate and nitrate and other impurities suspended in water. The differences on TSS level after three days and seven days standing period revealed significant differences among the treatments. The change in TSS maybe due to chitin cakes added thus implying that chitin is a good coagulating agent and has a natural hook that catches organic materials such as particulate and other contaminants in water which forming flocks that can easily be filtered out. The differences on color after standing period have changed. This implies that the chitin cakes has the ability to remove color due to sorption of dyes by chitin is exothermic, an increase in the temperature lead to an increase in the dye sorption rate, but diminishes total sorption rate capacity. The differences on odor after standing period have changed. That implies that chitin has the ability to remove odor as being observed several days after treatment. This could be attributed to the coagulating effect of the chitin forming the organic into flocs. The difference on pH level after three days and seven days standing period revealed significant differences among treatments. This indicates that chitin from crab shells has the ability to coagulate organic contaminants in wastewater. Thus it reduces the activity of microorganisms making changes on the pH level of treatments.
