    Kakawate (Gliricidia sepium) and citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) soap against sarcoptic and demodectic mange in dogs

    This study was conducted to test the (a) in vitro efficacy of kakawate oil against Sarcoptes scabiei and Demodex canis in terms of time of death, (b) evaluate the effectiveness of kakawate and citronella oil soap in terms of visual scoring, and (c) mite count reduction against Sarcoptes scabiei, and (d) mite count reduction against Demodex canis, and (e) verify the comparative analysis of the kakawate and citronella oil soap to kakawate leaf extract soap. In phase 1, mites were collected from (2) dogs, (one for D. canis and S. scabiei), and distributed into five (5) treatments. The most effective concentration (100%) was used for phase 2. Twelve dogs were randomly distributed into four treatments with (3) animals per replication. The gathered data were evaluated using qualitative and quantitative approaches and subjected to ANOVA. Treatment 4 (12% kakawate oil) had the shortest mean time of death against the mites. Treatment 2 (1% kakawate oil and 0% citronella oil) is highly effective in reduction of skin lesions and mite count of Sarcoptes scabiei (88.39 %) and T3 (1% kakawate and .033 % citronella) for Demodex canis (77.65%). Both T2 and T3 were as effective as T1(KLES).
