Geographic Information System (GIS) - Aided analysis on the Topographic characteristics of Gantay Watershed at Bacnotan, La Union
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2014-03) Omanito, Darryl Patrick A.
Information on the topographic boundary and some important physical characteristics of Gantay Watershed are not readily available. Resource managers require these kind of information to effectively manage his area of concern. Based from this situation, this study aimed to determine the topographic characteristics of Gantay Watershed at Bacnotan, La Union using Geographic Information System (GIS). Specifically it aimed to determine the topographic boundary and area of Gantay Watershed, determine the area distribution of the different slope categories, aspect, and elevation ranges, and to determine the accuracy of data generated from GIS. Topographic map no. 7076-II San Fernando where Gantay Watershed could be found was used as the origin of all data generated on the study. Georeferencing and digitizing techniques were applied in order to derive accurate data from the map such as topographic boundary and contour lines. Using GIS surface analysis, data on slope, elevation, and aspect were generated. Ground verification was done to determine the accuracy of data. A confusion matrix was created in order to analyze the data. In this study, the topographic boundary and area of the watershed were determined. Result of the study showed that most of the area falls under 0-8% slope category, elevation of the watershed ranges from 0-530 meters above sea level, and most slope faces west direction. The study also produced map of the three topographic characteristics with considerable overall accuracy. With the data produced from this study, watershed managers could have a basis in making logical decisions in order to formulate strategies for development in Gantay Watershed.
