(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus, 2011-05) Nobleza, Rhodora V.
The study focused on the enhancement of the syllabus in English Plus (Basic Grammar) and the development of modules in functional grammar. Specifically, the study determined the level of English grammar proficiency of senior high school students based on the correct use of the parts of speech in writing and the level of English grammar proficiency of senior high school students based on their ability in constructing correct sentence structures in their speech. The study used the descriptive-developmental types of research employing 169 respondents, 79 from Union Christian College and 90 from La Union National High School. Five (5) English teachers served as content validators of the English Proficiency test and 30 students for the pilot test. Findings showed that the level of English grammar proficiency of senior high school students in using the parts of speech in writing was MODERATELY PROFICIENT except on PRONOUNS where they were NOT PROFICIENT. Their level of English grammar proficiency in forming sentence structure in speech was MODERATELY PROFICIENT except in the giving of advice where they were rated NOT PROFICIENT. Based on the identified English grammar proficiency level test results of the senior high school students, the syllabus in English Plus was enhanced and modules were formulated for the freshmen of Union Christian College. The Modules in Functional Grammar was evaluated as a Good Fit or Highly Valid.
