Performance of two varieties of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus and Orechromis mossambicus) as affected by different fish meals
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus, 2000-03) Cabe, Glenda J.; Naungayan, Newlin V.
This study determined the performance of two varieties of tilapia ( O. niloticus and O. mossambicus ) as affected by different fish meas. A Two-Factorial experiment following the Randomized Completely Block Design ( RCBD ) with four treatments replicated three times was used. The treatment were: T0 Control ( commercial feed ), T1 ( 40% kuhol + 40% rice bran + 10% bread crumbs + 9% kangkong + 1% afsillin), T2 ( 40% kuhol + 40% rice bran + 10% bread crumbs + 9% camote + 1% afsillin ), T3 (40% kuhol + 40% rice bran + 10% bread crumbs + 9% malunggay + 1% afsillin). The study sought to answer the following questions: I. What are the effects of different fish meals on the performance of O. niloticus and O. mossambicus in terms of: a. Increase Fish Length ( cm ) b. Weight gain ( g ) c. Feed Conversion Efficiency ( FCE ) 2. Which fish meal is best for O. niloticus and O. mossambicus growth in terms of. a. Increase Fish Length ( cm ) b. Weight gained ( g ) 3. Which of the tilapia variety ( O. niloticus and mossambicus), has better growth when fed with fish meals? The study was conducted from September 27, to December 24, 1999 at Brgy. Nibaliw, San Fabian, Pangasinan. The methods used were: preparation of food ration, preparation of fishpond/ fishnets, preparation of fish, and care and management of fish. At the end of the study, the findings were the following: For the performance of tilapia, in terms of increase in length after 12 weeks, all the four treatments gave comparable results with a grand mean of 5.864cm length increase. Also both varieties gave comparable length increase. In terms of weight gain, the four feeds used resulted to comparable fish weight gained with grand mean of 124.594g. Both varieties gave comparable weight gain also. For feed conversion efficiency, T3 ( 40% kuhol + 40% rice bran + 10% bread crumbs + 9% malunggay + 1% afsillin ) fed on tilapia was the best feed used since it resulted to highest feed conversion efficiency of 57.942%. However varieties gave comparable feed conversion efficiency with 52.973%. Commercial feed (T0) comes next with 58.635% followed by T1 ( 40% kuhol + 40% rice bran + 10% bread crumbs + 9% kangkong + 1% afsillin ) with 50.637%. The least feed converter were the fishes fed with T2 ( 40%' kuhol + 40% rice bran + 10% bread crumbs + 9% camote + 1% afsillin ) with 49.678%.
